BRAVE
''The princess' black tears
bleeding out of her hands,
dark mourn of fear
waiting for freedom.
She lies restless, neither dead nor alive.''
Euth the barbarian, on seeing those verses, read the letter one more time. It was a request coming from hir sister, asking him to look for a cure for her curse. He had been searching for two years, but when he found the words he felt something new. It matched with the description given by the Oracle.
-Look at this, Dein!- said Euth. These words were written in the marble which covered a huge mausoleum, under a silver statue. There was a golden gate protecting the dead body.
-What?- answered Dein.
-Turn back- Then, the tall figure of the wizard stared at the tombstone.
-This is where the lady of sorrow lies, waiting till the end of time.- He Explained calmly to his mate.-I don't know more. It's an ancient story even for an elf like me.
-Lets go, then.- Euth started walking to the tomb, but Dein grasped him strongly.
-Wait, you fool! It's dangerous. We could die. No one knows what we're going to find.
-We know, the lady of sorrow.
-What else can you guess? It will be hard. There will be more difficulties than a golden gate in order to protect such princess.- Inquired the wizard. Euth didn't answer, he knew his mate was right. Finally he declared.
-I'm going. My sister needs me.- It sounded convincing. There was no other chance, and Dein wasn't going to let him alone, so that he got into the mausoleum, ignoring his fears. They both went down many steps, deep in the dark. Dein realized what was happening.
-Euth, this might be a trap. We're going too deep.
-I know, but these steps were the only thing we found when we crossed the gate. I'm going down..- His feelings were, once again, sweet and bitter. But, once again, he was so near...
Then, they arrived at a room. It was softly iluminated, and the lady of sorrow lied covered by a glass. She looked a beautiful young girl sleeping. It shocked Euth.
-But... How can it be possible? There should be only bones!-
-That means she's waiting for something that could give her eternal rest.- They were talking about that unbelievable phenomenon, when a voice said.
-You, you have come... I have been waiting since I died. Tell me... How is she?- It sounded like a tired mourn, as if it was a pain that had lasted too much.-Please, answer me; I know you were trying to find me.- Euth wasn't prepared for that. He had expected a furious ghost that would have done everything in order to guard its treasure, not a restless soul asking for the world of the living ones. Finally he got over the shock
-Well, I think you must know what I've come here for. So, do you have the cure? -
-Be patient, please. And first answer me.- I think I must, he thought, even if she only wants to have a little of fun; I need what she has.
-I saw her for the last time three months ago. She wasn't able to recognize me. - That memory hurt him.
-Oh, I see. I can lead you to my red sceptre, but only if you promise to give it back after her recover. - It seemed very few conditions for so precious an object.
-That's all?-
-Yes, that's all.-
-Then, Give it to me.- It was Euth's wish. But Dein realized that it was too easy.
-Wait! -
-Wha...What do you mean? -
-Where's the trap? It cannot be so easy!. - Roared the wizard.
-There's no trick here, noble elf.- The princess answerd
-Don't try to lie to me, witch, with flattering words! - His eyes were burning with fury, as he handled his staff.
-Are you threatening me! - It sounded like thunder mixed with a baby cry: strong and destructive.
-Yes, if you want to make us fall into your evil aims. - That enraged the restless lady, next her ghost appeared at last, then she threw a fireball. Of course, the wizard had prepared a defensive spell, so the burning explosion didn't affect him. Unfortunately, Euth had no defence against magic, so he fell and fainted.
Now the fate of Euth's sister depended on the result of that terrible fight. Spells flew through the room: fire, lightning, ice, darkness, energy, all, nothing. They fought during many hours, maybe only during a few seconds; but a huge power was released. When the energy turned back to the place where it had come from, both heroes were lying with unconscious. But the lady had vanished. Silence.
-Wake up, brother, wake up. I command you wake up.- He didn't know how, but it was his sister. He had to obey her. When he did, he stared at Dein.
The elf's left hand moved; only a little, but enough to make the warrior understand that he had survived. He didn't say a word, he only stood up in front of the barbarian. He had a small wound in his left hand, and it started to bleed. The liquid was black. Then, his face slowly changed, till it became a woman's face. The lady of sorrow.
-Flee, you fool.- Those were Dein's last words. A black form tore the wizard's stomach. It had no matter, it was only a shadow with many tentacles, no mouth and no eyes. But it was real. Euth ran away, fast like the wind. He finally got out of the mausoleum.
-Now, I'm free!- That voice hurt Euth's ears, although he had escaped. After that, the tomb of the elf lady fell down, and guarded that terrible creature for the rest of eternity.
He had saved the world from an evil creature, but he felt empty. Again, all had been useless. Again, he was as in the beginning. He only cried, he was tired of achieving nothing. His sister may die in a few days, and he didn't have a cure. He lied there, hopeless, like a weak child, waiting for something that wouldn't come. But it only lasted some hours. That brave warrior realized that he should face his destiny, and there was only one way. To turn back.
He withdrew the fallen stones and went to the tomb of the elf lady. There, he could find the corpse of his friend, and the monster.
-Why have you returned?-
-I'm taking the sceptre, and my friend.-
-You can't!- But he did. He didn't attacked the elf's soul, he only got the artifact ant the corpse and went out. It had no power over him.
-I shall return...!- promised the undead princess. Euth knew it was true, but it would be a task for another brave man.
When he was out of the graveyard, he sat on the ground. Finally, he had the wished for cure. He only smiled when he felt the rain beating his skin.
